DISCOVER THE COSMOS FROM MEDFORD

When the sun dips below the mountains in Southern Oregon, a different kind of magic unfolds. The skies above the Rogue Valley transform into a breathtaking celestial canvas — studded with constellations, sweeping views of the Milky Way, and the occasional meteor streak. Whether you’re an experienced astrophotographer or simply love the peace of a starlit sky, Medford is your perfect launchpad for exploring the wonders of the night.

WHY SOUTHERN OREGON IS A STARGAZER'S DREAM

Southern Oregon is uniquely suited for stargazing thanks to its low light pollution, high elevation spots, dry climate, and wide open skies. The Rogue Valley in particular sits in a geographical sweet spot — far from urban skyglow yet accessible via I-5 and the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport. The region’s diverse landscape of mountains, lakes, and volcanic plateaus offers some of the darkest skies in the Pacific Northwest.

Summer and early fall are ideal stargazing seasons here. The clear skies, warm nights, and minimal atmospheric disturbance make for unforgettable viewing conditions — whether you're chasing the Milky Way, capturing a lunar eclipse, or just watching satellites drift overhead.

TOP STARGAZING SPOTS IN SOUTHERN OREGON

Crater Lake National Park

An International Dark Sky Park and one of the best stargazing destinations in the U.S., Crater Lake offers awe-inspiring views at over 7,000 feet. The lake's deep blue surface reflects the sky, creating double the celestial beauty. Popular spots include Rim Village and Watchman Peak. Bring your tripod — night photography here is second to none.

Upper & Lower Table Rock

These iconic volcanic plateaus just minutes from downtown Medford offer 360-degree views of the valley. After a moderate hike (best done before sunset), you’ll find yourself at one of the most peaceful and panoramic places to gaze at the stars. Be sure to bring a headlamp for the descent.

Night Photography Tip: Table Rocks provide excellent foreground silhouettes for Milky Way shots.

Mt. Ashland

At nearly 7,500 feet, Mt. Ashland provides high-altitude clarity and wide-open skies. Its summit area is easily accessible in summer and fall, and the views stretch across the Klamath-Siskiyou wilderness. You might even spot a few night-skiers in winter months under a full moon.

Lake of the Woods

Nestled in the Cascade range about an hour from Medford, Lake of the Woods is a peaceful alpine landscape that reflects the night sky on its still waters. Campfires, quiet paddling, and s’mores under the stars make for the perfect family stargazing trip.

Local Tip: Visit in late August to catch the Perseid Meteor Shower away from crowds.

OTHER ACTIVITIES TO ROUND OUT YOUR STARGAZING ADVENTURE

Medford is more than just your stargazing basecamp — it’s a four-season destination filled with discovery. While you’re here:

Hike Rogue River Trails by day and soak in natural beauty before your night excursions.

Explore Local Wineries & Breweries along the Rogue Valley Wine Trail.

Dine in Downtown Medford, where creative chefs and local purveyors bring the region’s bounty to life.

TIPS FOR STARGAZING IN THE MEDFORD AREA

Check the Moon Phase: The best time to stargaze is during a new moon or when the moon is below the horizon.

Use a Star Map or App: Tools like Sky Guide, Stellarium, or Star Walk can help you identify constellations and track celestial events.

Bring the Right Gear: Tripod, flashlight with red filter, warm layers, and a thermos of cocoa go a long way.

Respect Nature: Stay on trails, pack out trash, and be mindful of wildlife — especially when hiking after dark.

DISCOVER THE NIGHT — FROM MEDFORD TO THE MILKY WAY

Whether you're drawn by the stars, the silence, or the thrill of capturing the cosmos through your lens, Southern Oregon delivers a stargazing experience that’s equal parts serene and spectacular. With Medford as your base, you're only a short drive from some of the darkest skies and most photogenic nightscapes in the West.

So grab your gear, look up, and get ready to be amazed.
