SOSC Nominees - Top Male and Female Athletes of 2016

 

Matt Retzlaff

Sport/Position: Southern Oregon University Football Wide Receiver

About: The Southern Oregon senior wide receiver from Medford led the NAIA in catches per game, was fourth in yards per game, was second-team all-American and set Raider career school records for receptions, yards and receiving TDs.

 

  

Ashley Claussen

Sport/Position: Southern Oregon University Bastketball Point Guard

About: The Southern Oregon senior was first-team All-American, averaging 17.8 points and shooting 43 percent on 3s and 86 percent at the line. Under first-year head coach Alex Carlson, the Raiders enjoyed the best season in school history, advancing to the NAIA national championship game for the first time before falling to Marian (Indiana), 59-48.

  

Chis Seto

Sport/Position: Southern Oregon Spartans Hockey Forward

About: The hockey forward from Surrey BC, Canada has helped the Spartans win 24 games so far for the 2016-2017 season. The Spartans are currently in second place in the Northwest Division Standings.



Marissa Dobry

Sport/Position: St. Mary's Distance Runner

About: Dobry placed 1st in the 2015 OSAA state Cross Country Championship meet leading her team to the team title. Dobry finished 2nd her junior year and her team likewise finished as runner-ups. Addiontionally, Dobry was recognized by the Southern Oregon Runners Club with the 2016 Pear Blossom Scholarship award. Dobry signed to run cross country and track at the Unviersity of California Berkley.


Braden Shipley

Sport/Position: Former North Medford High School, now Arizona Diamondbacks Pitcher

About: The former North Medford and University of Nevada, Reno pitching star made his big-league debut after several years of promise in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and stuck with the D'backs for the second half of the season.

 

 

Kiana Oshiro

Sport/Position: Crater High School Golfer

About: Oshiro helped the Comets claim their first state trophy in girls golf with a third-place showing at the Class 5A girls golf state tournament in May 2016. The now senior, won medalist honors with a 36-hole 2-under-par 124 at Quail Valley Golf Course. In addition, Oshiro won a individual state championship - second straight for Crater. 



Tyren Wolfe

Sport/Position: North Medford High School Sprinter

About: The former North Medford sprinter won the 100 and 200 races and was second in the 200, setting PR's in each at the 2016 6A state track and field meet.

 

 

  

Jessa Perkinson 

Sport/Position: Southern Oregon University Long Distance Runner

About: Perkinson claimed national titles in the 1,500 and 10,000 in 2016 as a sophomore. The Roseburg High School grad won in only her second 10K in a school record.

 

  

Alex Young

Sport/Position: Former Phoenix High School basketball player

About: The former Phoenix High standout completed his basketball career at UC Irvine as one of the most decorated in the NCAA Division I school's history. He led Irvine to a program best 28 wins as a senior. Young became the first in school history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.



Julissa Tago

Sport/Position: South Medford High School Basketball Guard

About: The South Medford senior capped her high school career with a record 42 points and third straight MVP in the Mail Tribune All-Star game. She earlier was a first-team all state selection as the Panther's went 25-5 and placed sixth in the state tourney.
